Many, many years had passed since the tragic events that had kept Tokyos residents in suspense. By now barely one could remember the name “Amano Makoto” and all the awful happenings that this name had summoned. Most people had forgotten all this already, but there was one person that had never stopped to keep those memories in her heart.
Sakita Shiori lived her life with full strength every day and enjoyed each and every minute, however she had never forgotten the case “Amano Makoto” and all the people that were involved. Especially that one person she just couldn’t banish from her heart.
Shioris gaze fell on a picture that she was holding in her slender hand which was now taken along and wrinkled throughout the years. You could see three persons on it: Shiori was sitting at a round table of the small café, beside her was Sora-chan standing with a big smile on her face showing a victory sign into the camera and beside her, also sitting, was a young man wearing a black suit with a slight smile on his lips. One that had only been seen on extremely rare occasions.
Shioris heart ached at the thought that she had not been able to protect this smile. She had tried everything in her past; however fate had not been on her side. That tragic night she had lost him; the man that she had given her heart to and for whom she wanted to become an angel: Naruse Ryo.
When she heard that steps were coming closer to her, she turned her gaze away from the picture and looked up to the person that was now standing beside her. It was a woman with long dark hair and a friendly smile on her lips. “Sora-chan, you are still here?” Those were the surprising words that Shiori said to her. Sora-chan had grown up to a gallant woman. Although she didn’t know the real story behind Naruse Ryo, she also couldn’t really forget that man ever.
When Shioris friend had decided to stop keeping the café, it was Sora-chan that had taken over that business. She had known how much that place meant to Shiori and she herself had made so many nice memories there. Since then she carried on with that business and she never had stopped calling Shiori “Shiori-neesan”. Also Shiori still called her “Sora-chan”.
Sora took one of the chairs from the table and sat besides the rocking chair in which her older friend was seated. “Hai, I cashed up so that I don’t have to do that tomorrow morning”, she replied Shiori with a bright smile. “Are you looking at that picture of us again? It’s really a wonderful photo. It was a good thing that my mom took it on that day, wasn’t it?” Shiori nodded slightly, but Sora could see, how sadness reflected in her eyes.
“You are still missing him Shiori-neesan, right?” a slight smile rushed over Shioris face, and then she brushed one gray strand of her hair out of her face with her hand. “Nee, Sora-chan. I had a fulfilling live, hadn’t I?” Sora looked surprisingly at her. „Eh? What’s that for a question?“ Again there was a slight smile on the face of the older woman. “I’m just saying. After all, I’m not the youngest anymore, my time’s running out. I just want to be able to say that I had lived my life at the best. That I had never given up, even after losing something so precious”, gently she stroke over her the photo with her aged hand. “You did that Shiori-neesan! You gave your best!” smilingly Sora replied her. „Thank you Sora-chan! Thank you for everything!” Both women looked at each others eyes and a soft laughter leaked Soras lips.
“If you are saying it like this then it sounds almost like a goodbye! But don’t forget, I’m coming back tomorrow morning. After all someone has to attend to the shop.“ She stood up and while passing she stroke gently over the older ones arm. “We see each other tomorrow!” Shiori nodded slightly, heard how the steps of the younger one moved away, how the door opened and the small bell rang when it closed again. Now she was all alone in the small building. Carefully she stood up from her rocking chair, put the photo on the table in front of her and walked some heavy steps towards the opposite commode. In the first drawer there was a medium-sized box, which Shiori hadn’t held in her hand, not to mention opened for many years already.
But today she wanted to take a look at it again. Therefore she lifted the box up and went back to her rocking chair. With slightly shaking hands she removed the lid and put it aside. Her gaze turned towards the content: a kid’s book, a flyer for a firework, a casket, a letter, a harmonica and tarot cards. She eyed everything accurately. How many years had past since she had seen all those things the last time? She couldn’t remember anymore, but even now, after all those years, each and every item still meant so much to her. She noticed how her heart began to beat faster instinctively and how her memories flushed through her mind. How she had met Sora for the first time, how they had sat together in the café a little later and Naruse had read from the book, how she had gotten the flyer from her friend abd stood in front of him with wild beating heart asking him if they could go there together.
How she had waited for him and almost lost the hope that he would come. But then, he had come after all. Much too late, but that hadn’t mattered cause what mattered was that he had come for her and they had spent the most beautiful evening together doing fireworks.
But she also remembered the pain that followed afterwards, when he had told her that this was the last time they had met and how the truth had come to light thereupon. The painful truth about the real identity of this man. But despite everything Shiori had known that he hadn’t been as cruel as everyone had thought; he had also had a really friendly, gentle, kind-hearted side and when she had held the letter in her hands and read it, she had known that she had to save this man no matter what! On his and her behalf!
Even today her heart ached when thinking about how everything had ended. What she had seen on that nigh and what had broken her heart. She had not been able to save him; he was gone and had taken her heart with him. Even though she had continued to live a happy life, she hadn’t been able to give her heart to someone else, as she had already given her heart to him.
Slowly she reached for the pretty wooden casket and opened it. A song that she knew very well started to play: “Over the rainbow” – her favorite song. Quietly she hummed the song a little bit, but then she put the casket on the table in front of her, however she let the lid open so that the beautiful melody kept playing.
The next item that she took in her hands was her old tarot cards. It has been a while since the last time she had laid them. Slowly she began to shuffle them. After some rounds she finally drew a covert card from the middle and laid the rest aside. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes before she flipped the card slowly over in her hand. When she opened her eyes again, she stared surprised at the motive.
She had expected everything, but not this one. Of course she knew the meaning of this card but she was unable to make head or tail of what could really be behind it. Although it confused her, there was a slight, almost happy sparkling in her eyes.
But that was disappearing all of a sudden, when she heard steps behind her; steps that approached her. “Sora-chan? Did you forget anything? I haven’t heard how you…“. While she was speaking, she turned around to the direction of the visitor, but what she saw, left her speechless. “Hisashiburi* Shiori-san!” Her gaze fell on the face of a smiling man with beautiful eyes, full lips and black shining hair. He was wearing a noble looking suit and although Shioris eyesight wasn’t the best anymore, she immediately knew who was standing only a few steps away from her in the small café. For a short while her heart almost stopped beating and the sight took her breath away.
“Na- Naruse-san?” disbelieving came the name over her lips. She had to wink a few times until she registered that this wasn’t a dream. Her pulse began to beat faster and her grip around the tarot card, which she still hold in her hands, became firmer.
All these years she had to live her live without her beloved, all these years had made her grown old, all these years there hadn’t been t a day she could forget that special person, all these years she had wished profoundly to see him again. And now, on this rainy day, suddenly he stood in front of her. He hadn’t changed a bit; he still looked like the Naruse that Shiori remembered. Like how he looked on the faded photo. But the sadness, the despair, the anger and the hate that had been hidden within him in the past was gone.
“What … why .. are you here?” echoed her voice tremblingly in the room. “I came because of you.” His voice was music in her ears. Could he only speak to her eternally. „I wanted to see you again!“
Shiori couldn’t withhold a soft laughter. “This could have been my sentence. How I had wished to see you again for all these years. All these years I had hoped that there was a way to be by your side again…. But as much as I had hoped and prayed, you didn’t come back. You hadn’t come to get me.“ The young man noticed the sad smile that was now appearing on her lips.
“I hadn’t wanted that you throw away your life. You should enjoy your life, savour it completely and I know you did that. Not like me. There were hard times, but there were also really nice times, right?” Shiori had to smile. Yes, he was right. Despite everything she had lived a beautiful life.
“But now…” he paused for a brief moment and stared at the floor as if he first had to collect himself. When he looked up again, Shiori could see uncertainty in his eyes. She remembered their time together in the past. There had also been many moments in which he had looked at her like this. Mostly he had ran away then, but today she noticed that something had changed in the look of the man.
The uncertainty changed to determination. “Shiori-san, I know it’s been a long time, but… do you still want to be my angel?” Her eyes widened out of surprise and it seemed like time had stopped. This was exactly what she had wished for all these years and what still hadn’t changed even now. There was a feeling of freedom spreading within her after hearing those words; a big burden vanished from her soul, because finally, finally after all this time it seemed like her biggest wish was coming true.
Shiori wasn’t replying. Instead she stood up and rushed over to Naruse to finally put her arms around his neck and embrace him dearly. Tears were running down her cheeks, but those were tears out of happiness.
With one hand the lawyer stroke gently over her head, while he wrapped the other one around her body tightly to give her a squeeze. He never wanted to leave her alone anymore. “Finally! I have missed you so much! I will be your angel. For ever and ever!“. Just now when hearing her light sounding voice, she noticed that she had changed back to her young self. The wrinkles and the crumpled skin was gone; she was now looking like her old self from the past when she had met Naruse for the first time.
Slowly they parted from their embrace and looked at each other’s eyes deeply. The lawyer raised his hand carefully and stroked away the last tear of Shiori’s cheek with his thumb. He let his hand rest on the soft skin and noticed how it turned slightly pink and how Shiori looked at him shyly and unsure suddenly. Normally this was also a moment for him to feel unsure, but no, this time he finally wanted to take the step which he already wanted to take years ago, but couldn’t as he strayed from the right path.
Gently he held her head while his face slowly bent down to her. When her faces were only a few centimetres apart from each other, Shiori closed her eyes. Smoothly she felt his tender lips on hers. Heat flushed through her body and her heart began to beat faster. She felt like during that one night when they both had lid the fireworks. Free from everything, only her fast beating heart and the warmth of the man, whom she had given her heart for all time.
Tightly his arms embraced her body and squeezed her. And she also put her arms around him, dug her head deep in his shoulder and inhaled his scent. Never again they wanted to let go of the other.
It was early in the morning, when Sora-chan came back to the small cafe. She was surprised to find Shiori still sitting in the racking chair while the melody of the casket was still playing.
Slowly she went over to her friend. “Shiori-neesan! Have you slept here all night long? You should have better gone to your bed!” But when she put her hand on the shoulder of the supposed sleeping woman, her eyes widened out of shock. “Shiori… neesan?” There was no reply. Suddenly her gaze went to something that Shiori was holding in her hand. With shaking hands she lifted it up and looked at it. It was a tarot card.
“The Lovers” could be seen on the front and when she flipped the card over she noticed that someone had handwritten something on the back:
“Together for all eternity”
Tears were running down her cheeks, but there was also a slight smile appearing on her face.
Shiori had found her peace … at the side of her lover.
* Hisashiburi = it has been a while
